PHOBOS-GRUNT was a Russian space mission to Phobos (one of the moons of Mars). Its aim was to investigate the Phobos’ surface and to study Mars; its atmosphere’s dynamics, dust storms and seasonal climate changes. One of the three instruments dedicated to collecting samples from Phobos’ surface is a unique geological penetrator CHOMIK which was designed and manufactured in Polish CBK PAN in Warsaw. Phobos-Grunt was launched in November 2011. However, as the technical problems with the last rocket stage appeared, the experiment failed.
